Protagonist and reflexivity

I want to present all this with the help of protagonist Christien. She will be the person that links all sub-questions to each other. Christien is 24 years old and lives in Leiden. She studies at Leiden University and is a social girl. In addition to studying, she has a side job at Picnic. Before the Corona crisis, she worked about two days a week. Christien has been working there for two and a half years, so she is an experienced employee. She knows well how the work at Picnic works. I am therefore glad to be able to follow her as she can form an opinion on the changes in the work. She is also much more at work than before, so she also has a lot of experience with the Corona way of working.

The reason I liked this research so much, had to do with Christien. Because we are also good friends in addition to housemates, we also have much fun together. This made the process of filming not only educational, but also a lot of fun. Contact with the protagonist is, according to many visual methods anthropologists an important part of the research. As a filmmaker, you create a collective emotion that you want to convey through film (Snowdon 2015: 7). If you want collective emotion and accompanying images to match the reality of your protagonist as closely as possible, I think that as a film maker, you and your camera should be guided as much as possible by your protagonist. I feel responsible, but also honored to be able to interpret the image of my protagonist. Showing someone else’s reality can provide new insights and good cooperation between the filmmaker and the protagonist is crucial for this (Veronie Rouschop, CA07).

I also found it important to present reflexivity in the film, because this makes the viewer realize that someone else’s point of view is presented. This film is a reflection of my view on the story of Christien, and by including myself as a filmmaker in to film every now and then, through some speaking or reflection in windows and mirrors, I hope that people realize that there is a process behind the film. I hope the viewer will not take the point of view of the film for granted, but realize that someone else’s reality is being displayed and that this film is my interpretation of Christien her story.

In my opinion, the ambiance during the process was decisive for the different shots that were made and also for the final result, I would like to share some behind the scenes shots with you. The goal of this behind the scenes is for the viewer to taste a little bit more ambiance and to get to know the protagonist and the filmmaker. Hopefully paying attention to the characteristics of the protagonist and the filmmaker will make the final film more clear.
